Prime Minister Imran Khan, took briefing on various Special Economic Zones (SEZs) being developed across the country and showed his satisfaction over the progress. He also asked the ministries involved to establish one Special Economic Zone in Karachi as well.
This announcement was made by the Prime Minister while chairing a meeting to assess the progress made in the China Pkaistan Economic Corridor projects and encourage investment.
The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and federal ministers, including Hammad AAzhar and Khusro Bakhtiar.
He also instructed the Board of Investment to develop and submit a detailed plan to support foreign investment in specific sectors, in consultation with the business community.
He also ordered relevant authorities to take immediate measures to remove obstacles in issuing long-term visas to foreign investors, especially Chinese investors.
The concept of Special Industrial Zone in Karachi is an old one and was previously part of Initial CPEC Plan. Under the initial CPEC plan a special economic zone had to be established at Dhabeji to promote Industrial activity in the Province. However, no progress was achieved on the plan and Dhabeji SEZ was put on back burner.
The Karachi SEZ Concept is again being revitalized to gather public attention.
