Mobile phone company Ufone won a $ 279 million Bid on Friday to buy unused Telecom spectrum in Pakistan
The Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) began selling unused frequencies late last year.
The frequency under auction belongs to 1800 and 2100 MHz frequencies, which are usually used by operators of 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) networks, providing faster video streaming and downloading over the Internet.
“The total spectrum won by Ufone is 9 MHz in the 1800 MHz band, which is 70.3% of the total spectrum in that band during the current auction,” PTA said in a statement.
PTA added that the auction will increase Ufone’s frequency response from 6 MHz to 15 MHz in the 1800 MHz band by improving the quality and coverage of voice and data services.
Earlier, the government had expected proceeds from the auction to be $ 831.8 million, but PTA received only one bid, downplaying the government’s efforts to increase revenue.
As per news sources, Other Telecom Companies believe that current spectrum auction do not pose economic viability to invest in the spectrum.
