As of April 30, 2023, there were 3.58 million taxpayers in the Active Taxpayers List (ATL). This is up from 1.8 million in 2018, 2.4 million in 2019, and 2.9 million in 2020.
The FBR expects the number of taxpayers to continue to increase in the coming months. They project that the ATL will reach 4.4 million by the end of 2023. This is based on the average monthly growth rate of 3%.
The FBR adviser, Dr Waqar Masood, had estimated that there are 7.4 million potential non-filers in Pakistan. Former Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin has also stated that there are 15 million potential taxpayers.
The increase in the number of taxpayers is a positive sign for the Pakistani economy. It shows that more people are paying their fair share of taxes. This will help to generate revenue for the government, which can be used to fund important projects and services.
The government is taking a number of steps to encourage more people to file income tax returns. These include simplifying the tax filing process, offering tax breaks, and cracking down on tax evasion.
The government’s efforts are paying off. The number of taxpayers is increasing, and this is a good thing for Pakistan
