On Thursday, the government’s economic coordination committee approved the import of 50,000 tons of sugar to maintain sufficient supplies in the country.
The ECC has approved sugar imports in a separate tender for 50,000 tonnes to increase competition as global sugar prices fall, the Finance Ministry said in a press release.
Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin chaired a meeting of the government’s economic coordination committee.
Javad Rafiq Malik, from Minister of Industry, informed the committee that there are sufficient sugar reserves.
He also learned about the measures by which sugar imports are implemented to create strategic reserves.
The committee also stressed the need to ensure a stable supply of sugar throughout the country and led the start of the crushing season for sugar factories in early November 2021, just like last year.
