On Sunday, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the inclusion of the Karachi Comprehensive Coastal Development Zone (KCCDZ) in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as a significant step, stressing that his government would put Karachi at par with the developed world port cities.

“We are cleaning up the marine habitat of fishermen, building 20,000 homes for low-income people and providing opportunities for investors,” the Prime Minister said in a statement.

In this context, he highly appreciated the role of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs. Earlier on Saturday, the federal government announced plans to rehabilitate the Karachi coastal corridor with $ 3.5 billion in Chinese investment under CPEC.

The federal government said Pakistan and China have agreed to invest billion of dollars in KCCDZ in the China-Pakistan economic corridor under the plan.

The official statement said that “an important decision was made at the 10th meeting of the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC), which took place on September 23, 2021 in Islamabad and Beijing.”

KCCDZ is an initiative of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to provide Karachi with “the modern urban infrastructure that makes Karachi one of the best port cities in the world.”

According to the federal government, KCCDZ will be developed on a restored area of ​​about 640 hectares in the western swamp of the KPT (Karachi Port Trust), KCCDZ is a major project not only for Pakistan, but for the entire region.
