Central Development Working Party (CDWP) held meeting on Tuesday headed by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan. CDWP gave approval to 3 projects valued at Rs. 5.52 billion.
Senior representatives from the Planning Commission and Federal Ministries/Divisions also participated in the meeting while representatives from provincial governments participated through video conferences.
Projects related to Physical Planning & Housing, Governance, Education and Science & Technology were reviewed during the meeting.
A project related to the Governance section reviewed in the meeting for extension in the implementation period of “Young Development Fellows (2nd Revision)” worth Rs. 133.720 million approved by the CDWP. The program aims to groom talented young women and men with distinguished academic background and potential for leadership. This program will enhance the capacity of young Pakistanis in the area relevant to Planning Commission such as development, strategic planning, performance management & evaluation, project management, energy, public policy formulation, and development communications.
Two other projects related to Physical Planning & Housing presented in the meeting. First project namely “Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme (K-IV) having capcaity of 260 Million Gallon per Day (Phase-1)” worth Rs. 25.55 billion was referred to ECNEC for approval. The K-IV is designed to have a total capacity of 650 MGD (Million Gallons per day) to meet the demand of roughly 20 million inhabitants of Karachi City. Th project is being carried out in phases with first phase having acpacity of 250MGD of water suppply.
Deputy Chairman Planning Commission highlighted that there is a water shortage in Karachi and therefore the project needs to be carried out on urgent basis and all the agencies involved are committed to fast track/ prioritizing the project.
Another project titled “Provision of Clean Drinking Water in Model Areas UC-99, 100 & 101, Lahore” worth Rs. 1.65billion was approved in the meeting.
A project pertaining to Education namely “Renovation/ Rehabilitation of Physical Infrastructure of 200 Educational Institutions under Prime Ministers’ Education Reform Program in ICT, Islamabad (phase-II)” worth Rs. 3.73billion was approved by CDWP. The project plans to construct 237 classrooms, repainting/renovation of infrastructure, repair of floors, rising of boundary wall, provision of concertina with barbed wire, construction of water tank. The aim of the project is to give a better infrastructure of public institutions, to provide a conducive and better environment, and to provide missing facilities in ICT schools.
A Concept Clearance Paper presented by Government of Punjab namely “Revamping of Water supply and Sewerage Facilities in Multan” valuing at Rs. 4 billion was approved by the concept clearance committee. The sponsoring agency will be JICA and the executing agency would be WASA, MDA Multan.
