In a briefing given to ithe federal minister of railways Muhammad Azam Khan Swati who was on a visit to the Karachi Port Trust, it was conveyed that establishment of a marshalling yard at Wazir Mansion railway station will be initiated soon.
The establishment of the Marshalling Yard will significantly declinE turnaround time for containers, decreasing the port area congestion and improving the freight service of Pakistan Railways. The facility will improve not only Railways efficiency but will also increase the efficiency of the Port. The briefing was given by Pakistan Railways CEO Nisar Ahmad Memon and other senior officers of Pakistan Railways.
Marshalling Yard is a place where railway wagons are shunted and shaped into various form of trains besides placing engines and wagons there which are not in use. Currently, Pakistan Railways operates a single marshalling yard outside Karachi city at Pipri.
Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Azam Khan Swati in his visit to KPT was briefed about Thirty-Three kilometres long rail network at KPT, with a container handling capacity of 125 million tons. The Minister showed his willingness to work with KPT to contribute to the economic development of the country.
The railway’s minister also visited the Wazir Mansion station followed by South Asia Pacific Terminal (SAPT), the main container loading facility in Karachi where he was briefed about the operations of the terminal. The minister assured KPT management of support for enhancing the share of railways freight so as to reduce the cost of doing business.
