Mr. Najy Benhassine, the Country Director of the World Bank, reiterated the World Bank’s willingness to offer technical expertise and financial assistance to aid Pakistan in reaching its development objectives. This affirmation came during his courtesy visit to Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Pakistan’s Minister for Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, and Privatization.

Mr. Benhassine emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts between the World Bank and the Pakistani government to tackle immediate economic challenges and promote sustainable development.

Accompanying Mr. Benhassine were members of his team, including Mr. Tobias Akhtar Haque, Lead Country Economist, and Mr. Gailius J Draugelis, Operations Manager. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary of Finance, Secretary of the Economic Affairs Division, and senior officials from the Finance and Economic Affairs Division.

Dr. Shamshad Akhtar acknowledged the pivotal role of the World Bank as one of Pakistan’s major development partners. She expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s continued support and dedication to Pakistan’s economic growth through ongoing development projects. These projects are designed to bolster Pakistan’s fiscal management, institute fundamental reforms, and uplift the general populace.

Dr. Shamshad Akhtar further informed the delegation about the comprehensive measures being undertaken by the interim government to enhance the country’s revenue collection and implement sound fiscal policies. She emphasized the unwavering commitment of the caretaker government to fulfilling its obligations under the IMF program and ensuring the timely completion of all ongoing development projects.

Moreover, she underscored the government’s determination to prioritize the well-being of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, through targeted initiatives that promote inclusive development and mitigate the impact of economic challenges on the people of Pakistan.

During the meeting, both parties exchanged ideas and discussed their shared vision of promoting economic stability and social development in Pakistan, with the ultimate goal of fostering a prosperous and resilient future for the country. Dr. Akhtar emphasized the need for support in strengthening social safety nets to provide essential relief to the masses during challenging economic circumstances.
