The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced to pay each mosque’s Imam a stipend of Rs 10,000 a month effective form July 1st, 2021. With estimated numbers of prayer leaders around 22,000 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KpK), this will cost an estimated Rs.220 million a month, or Rs 2.5 billion a year to the provincial government.
The provincial government will go ahead with the plan despite not having complete details of eligible Imams, and Auqaf Department presence in all districts.
Although a good step to enhance the livelihood of Mosque Prayers, who mostly rely on Mosque Donations for survival, initiation of Stipends without proper verification and documentation may lead to embezzlement of funds. A precedence exists int eh form of Benazir Income supoort progra, where Billion of Rupees were embezzled by non-eligible beneficiaries.
Hence, KPK Government should conduct proper verification and documentation before initiation of the scheme.
