In a major development, Pakistan has successfully developed a single dose of the COVID-19 Cansino vaccine to accelerate the vaccination campaign. This is expected to lessen the burden on the country’s healthcare system which is currently battling the 3rd wave of the COVID19 Pandemic.
In a tweet, Faisal Sultan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Health, said: “Congratulations to the NIH Pak team and their leadership for successfully filling/finishing (from concentrate) of the cansino vaccine from Casino Bio.Inc China “.
He added: “The product has undergone rigorous internal quality testing. A critical step to help our vaccine supply line. ”
The vaccine, dubbed Pakvac, will be available for citizens to administer by the end of May after approval by the Drug Control Administration of Pakistan (DRAP). The vaccine has been tested by the quality control department of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Earlier, the government had decided to produce the CanSino COVID-19 vaccine locally with help from China.
The head of the National Institute of Health, Major General Aamer Ikram, told the parliamentary health committee that the dose of COVID19 vaccine in China will be produced locally.
He said China is in agreement to transfer the vaccine technology to Pakistan, while a Chinese group is overseeing a project at the National Institutes of Health.
