The vaccine produced by Sinovac Biotech, one of the most widely used in the world, does not provide enough antibodies to neutralize the Omicron variant, A Hong Kong researcher said in preliminary laboratory results that could have serious consequences for billions of people who have taken the Shot to protect them from Covid-19.
Of the 25 people fully vaccinated with the Sinovac dose , none of them had enough antibodies in their serum to neutralize Omicron, according to a statement released by a team of researchers from the University of Hong Kong.
The researchers said that in a separate group of 25 people who were fully vaccinated with an mRNA injection developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, five of them had the ability to neutralize the new variant.
About 2.3 billion doses of sinovac have been released, most of them in China and developing countries. Since the Japanese study considered Omicron to be at least four times more infectious than the delta variant, the possibility of re-vaccination against the new strain complicates the world’s efforts to survive a pandemic.
