Sindh Minister of Health and Social Services Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho has confirmed that British, South African and Brazilian variants of COVID-19 have been found in Sindh.
In particular, a genetic study of 13 different coronavirus samples was carried out at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKU). The British variant was found in 10 samples, and South Africa and Brazil variants, in one sample each. The original COVID-19 strain was found in one sample.
The video interview by Dr. Azra called the development alarming, stating that these strains have high infection and mortality rates, adding that these strains have also not responded to vaccines as the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines against these strains has yet to be determined.
She urged the public to avoid crowded places, social distances and unnecessary travel and follow the COVID-19 SOP, otherwise a humanitarian situation similar to India could arise in the province.
